Dear Colleagues,
With each passing day, artificial intelligence continues to transform how we carry forth our
mission as a university: the way we work, teach, learn, conduct research and make life better
for our city, country and world.
As you have no doubt experienced for yourself, AI holds extraordinary potential to enhance and
expand our operations, accelerate our discovery and help us address some of society’s most
complex and deeply rooted problems. Tulane researchers are at the forefront of using AI to
advance the discovery of new energy technologies, revolutionize cancer treatment, reconsider
art history by illuminating hidden creative networks, and help public health professionals spot
disease risks sooner — to cite just a few of many examples across every corner of our
campuses.
At the same time, we recognize that this new and ever-evolving technology presents challenges
alongside its vast promise, and must be employed thoughtfully. As a university, we continue to
evaluate how to best use AI with purpose, vision and wisdom to advance our mission while
leading with our core values. A key priority is ensuring that we protect the privacy of our
community, secure the intellectual property of the university and safeguard the value and
potential of Tulane innovation so that it is not misused.
In this spirit, we are pleased to announce the launch of TulaneAI, the university's new secure
generative AI platform. The platform will be open to all Tulane faculty and staff beginning Sept.
1, providing the Tulane community with a safe and private GenAI workspace hosted in Tulane's
own cloud environment. More information about TulaneAI is available at policy.tulane.edu.
This launch is a milestone in Tulane's commitment to give every member of our community
uniform access to transformative AI tools. We can't wait to see what you do with it.
Tulane’s strength lies in its relational culture, which brings together individuals from vastly
different backgrounds and areas of expertise to work, learn, explore and innovate for the
common good. Our first and foremost prompt is to use our knowledge, skills and advancements
to help communities here in Louisiana and around the world. AI and other tools can assist in
achieving these goals in the virtual world, so that we can continue to focus on bringing about
positive change and improving lives in the real one.
